Elsewhere, I've recommended Freeman's introduction to the ancient world, Egypt, Greece and Rome but I thought his Closing of the Western Mind is very poor as history. I was slightly surprised when he went ballistic over God's Philosophers but I had been unflattering about Closing a few years before. I bought one of Charles Freeman's books recently and checked out his updated author bio. Rather intriguingly it reads 'With a mass of new material on the issues having been published in the last ten years, he is anxious to update Closing, perhaps in a new format focusing more on the ‘reopening’ of the Western mind in the medieval and Renaissance period'.
