OK, here is another hypothesis: intelligent people are more likely to go to college and university than average people because they are more likely to do well (and enjoy) "brainy" jobs/careers. But many atheist scientists and intellectuals assume or imply that believers are stupid (e.g. some "new atheists" explicitly state ridicule as a "method" of convincing believers to change their minds). Nobody likes being called stupid. From pride and in order to appear respectable many more nominal Christians at college leave their "faith" than their peers who are without this social pressure. Now to set up an experimental design by which to determine if it is the learning of new facts, higher intelligence per sé, more thinking about the issues or this social pressure which results in higher numbers of atheists! :-)
