New History for Atheists article, this time on the hoary myth about Pope Gregory IX ordering the killing of cats and so causing the Black Death: "Cats, the Black Death and a Pope"Enjoy.

Thanks for that, Tim. I'm surprised so few people actually fail to question whether a high population of cats would even prevent or limit the spread of a plague. (And that image No More Make Believe chose for that meme is just weird!)

Thanks for that, Tim. I'm surprised so few people actually fail to question whether a high population of cats would even prevent or limit the spread of a plague. (And that image No More Make Believe chose for that meme is just weird!) Agreed. Especially on the weird image. I make the point about the death toll in the Middle East and Central Asia being as high as in Europe to try to emphasise that having plenty of cats really made no difference. When you get a triple pandemic of plague in populations with no immunity, no understanding of bacteria and no anti-biotics, lots of people are going to die. End of story. I suppose this silly story is appealing because it plays on common ideas about simple one-to-one linear correspondences in history ("no cats = lots of rats = they all died!"), makes modern people feel smugly superior to our stupid ancestors and gets in a kick at the Catholic Church. What's not to like?

My latest History for Atheists post has gone semi-viral. Well, it's got a hell of a lot of hits thanks to Easter and some pernicious pseudo historical memes: "Easter, Ishtar, Eostre and Eggs"Enjoy.
