I'm also staggered by his threats to tell tales in public about the sex lives of his accusers. Whether they are true or false, that's a really cretinous move. He could get prison time for that in this country. Are there any similar statutes in the States? I don't think he'll get in trouble for that under criminal law as long as he doesn't post pictures of it, as such details often enter courtrooms in cases about sexual abuse. Sweden is probably exceptional in this way even in Europe (where freedom of speech is less broad).

Sweden is probably exceptional in this way even in Europe (where freedom of speech is less broad). I'm not in Sweden and it is covered in revenge porn laws in this country, the United Kingdom. If you spread such tales it is treated as a form of blackmail and you can get three years for it. The things you learn when taking sex education lessons for adolescents... PS - I think we may be at cross purposes. In a criminal case, witnesses would be anonymous and their identity injuncted. Moreover, barristers would tend to focus only on the activity between the two individuals as anything else is not strictly relevant (besides in such a slanging match between Carrier and anyone below Messalina there would only be one winner). What Carrier is threatening to do, as I understand it, is publish general information about their wider sex lives that they have either given him in private or he has found out from other sources in confidence. That's extremely dangerous (not to say wholly unethical) and like I say the Old Bill can feel your collar for it here. Also it would of course likely wreck any chance of a successful defamation action. I wonder if he's thought of that?

Thanks for catching those - fixed. Blogspot doesn't let me edit comments, just delete them. So I added a reply directing people to Carrier's new blog for that article. Such sweet words about Carrier. Why it's almost as though he penned them himself!

I'm afraid I just find this whole sordid affair tragic. Carrier is interested in the same sort of stuff I am, but comes at it from exactly the opposite point of view. For me, that made him the perfect opponent and I have enjoyed responding to his stuff. I'm looking forward to dealing with his PhD thesis now that is coming out as a couple of books. His personal life is much less interesting.

His thesis can also be accessed through ProQuest, by the way.
