Even book prizes can go awry it seems. The Royal Society Science Book Prize (which you may recall I was shortlisted for back in 2010, much to Charles Freeman's disgust) this year went to a book on gender studies. On one level I was delighted because it was published by my publisher, a tiny independent that has never won a major prize before. But for the Royal Society it is more than a little embarrassing.
