This isn't really a goodbye, more of an explanation. Some of you that I knew better might have noticed that I haven't been around so much recently. I guess it's just been a case of my interests gradually drifting on to other things, as I've started reading source books on philosophy and history more than I read blogs and forum posts! I still drop by from time to time, but not as much as I used to.
I just wanted to take the chance to thank everyone who posts here, theists, atheists and agnostics alike, for all the fascinating discussions I've read and taken part in on these forums, not only on history but also on religion, theology and science. Discussions are almost always polite and friendly here, a world away from the rancour that can so often disfigure talk about these things. I think this is a great community you have here and hope it lasts a long time.
When I first encountered James' blog I was surprised and even shocked to discover that almost everything I thought I knew about the middle ages was wrong, and that there were records to prove it. Yes, I shamefully admit it, I bought the "conflict thesis" hook, line and sinker (Galileo, Hypatia, Wilberforce-Huxley debate and all). Since then you've all, in your own ways, helped me develop a passion for a much-maligned period of history and also made me think about philosophical and even theological questions I'd never even considered seriously before.
Whilst I still can't say for certain what my final theological position will be (I'm currently leaning non-religious classical theist), I can say that I've considerably revised my metaphysical opinions of late, and I'd like to thank everyone here for helping me navigate this by so clearly and politely putting forward their differing views on these topics.
All the best, guys! ;D
