How do more recent sociologists and historians of religion regard Mircea Eliade's ides about ancient religions--e.g., myth of eternal return, terror of history, participation in primordial time as the source of all meaning? To what extent are his conclusions accepted today? Can someone recommend more current sources on ancient religions?

I really don't know becuase it's a long time since I tired to research his standing. I know in the 80s I had a book called Religion in Trial by Dudley Gilford III. He was defending Eliade agaisnt critics. AT that time it seemed there was beginning to be a group of academics where starting to challenge him. I don't know how far they got. I would be interested in knowing that.
