I suppose I should feel honoured, after all - it puts me in esteemed company. On the Gullibility of Bart Ehrman & the Asscrankery of Tim O’NeilDr Genius still can't manage to spell my name correctly, though I suspect that is deliberate. Unlike Carrier, I'm happy to admit when I get things wrong. After all, I'm a guy with a demanding full time job and so don't have the luxury of time afforded to a full time unemployed dilettante. So when the fact that I got my Ἄνανος confused with my Ἀνανίας was brought to my attention, I thanked the person who did so, acknowledged my error publicly and amended my article. You know - like an adult. The rest of his sneer is his usual misrepresenation and some stentorian repetation of his arguments over the James passage in Antiquities. But I was intrigued by the part where he claims the pompous conclusion to his Josephus and Origin article was not in his original and was required by his reviewers: "This is quite funny. Because it proves O’Neil is an amateur. Many journals require us to write these statements. And indeed this was one such case: the article I submitted had no such section. The peer reviewers insisted that I write it. To oblige them, I did." I find it hard to believe that reviewers would say "You need to tack on a paragraph that declares future commentaries on the relevant texts of Origen and Josephus must take your conclusion into account, as must any treatments of the evidence for the historical Jesus. And you have to declare that all reference works that treat “James the brother of Jesus” must be emended to reflect your little article". Yet this is the claim Artie Ziff makes.

I have never seen you post anywhere and suggest that you are anything but an amateur.

Editors typically require an article to explain the contribution it is making to the field, in order to identify its practical value. But they don't require authors to do so with bloviating self-adulation and Brobdingnagian pomposity. This is a classic example of Carrier retreating behind spin. There is no way the journal required him to write that specific content.

Mr. O'Neill, you should do your penance immediately, before Carrier declare you as non-existing person. Something like www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIAdHEwiAy8

Dr Genius still can't manage to spell my name correctly, though I suspect that is deliberate. I doubt that this is deliberate. I had an exchange with him on his blog a couple of years ago where I noted that he kept mispelling my name and yet he kept it up. It's deliberate. This man-child is really that immature. Though in other news, he is moving from California to Ohio, driving his own stuff in a van all the way. Congratualtions Mrs Carrier! And he is happy to inform us that several of his harem of "girlfriends" is helping out with the driving on various legs of his epic exodus. Ew. All he needs now is a ukelele. Edit: Or perhaps one of his flock could buy Pastor Carrier a ukelele via his characteristically modest patreon.com online begging page. Its summary of his work is certainly stirring stuff. As is this snippet: "Dr. Carrier has escaped the interdepartmental politics and tanking fortunes of the formal academy to write independently and pursue his interests as an educator, activist, historian, and philosopher." Ah, so that's it! He "escaped" the clutches of an actual academic career in the nick of time, the crafty fellow! Does his utter bollocks briiliance have no end?

Ah, so that's it! He "escaped" the clutches of an actual academic career in the nick of time, the crafty fellow! Does his utter bollocks briiliance have no end? That is good. By that standard, I have escaped both the life of a multi-millionaire and a career as Prime Minister.

(Of course, "rn" really looks like "m" if you are in a hurry and have vision problems) freethoughtblogs.com/carrier/archives/749#comment-9725I just love the way Fortigurn dismantled his arguments there. Not everyone has that opportunity.

He has just 48 patrons providing $99 per blog post. That is utterly tragic. Obviously virtually no one knows or cares enough about Dr Carrier and his work. In contrast, a guy I know who produces lore commentary on the Dark Souls series of video games, has 1,022 patrons and earns $5,333 per month. Video games.

I must say the information he gave about how little he earns and how he is only just starting to save for his retirement made me pity the guy. Since I'm writing a reply to his "Asscrank" post that may be, in places, mildly sarcastic to the point of being somewhat uncharitable, I am moved to be actually charitable by becoming a Carrier patron. I'll announce this, with suitable expressions of humanistic pity for his poverty, at the end of my article.

After all, I live pretty comfortably (compared to him I'm filthy rich), so it's sad to see that his dubious life choices have reduced him to this poor state. I'll announce this, with suitable expressions of humanistic pity for his poverty, at the end of my article. I have none. If the guy is so pig-headed or delusional to make these decisions at his age, he can deal with the consequences. Heck, he could have had a well-earning wife supporting him if he'd learned to keep his cock in his pants - and EVEN THAT was something he's tried at length to justify, to make it seem like he's the victim in a misunderstanding world that NEEDS TO CATCH UP WITH HIS THINKING AND BRILLIANCE! For full disclosure (and for contrast) I've contributed financially to JP Holding's website. Now, plenty folk have no time for the man or his work, and he is required to live reasonably frugal life because of his work. The key difference (aside from him being able to understand the eighth commandment) is that Holding was from the beginning aware of the financial risk he was taking, and freely admits that he could earn more from being a librarian - he does his job because he feels it's a calling, and if he doesn't earn big bucks, well, so be it. Carrier though genuinely doesn't seem to realise that "escaping the clutches of academia" is actually just a euphamism for being unemployed because no-one else can stomach you. Sorry if this seems harsh. I'm sure he's a nice fellow in person.

Not everyone has that opportunity. That remark by Carrier had me rolling. I think it is obvious that, had a reputable institution of higher learning (or even a disreputable one) offered him a tenure track position, he would have bid his internet following adieu for the life of polyamorous trysts with female grad assistants.
