Stark seems to have gone into odd territory after the secularization debates of the 90s and early 00s. As with many academics who venture out of their field (he is a sociologist) strange things sometimes come out on the other end. I applaud most scholars trying to rectify old preconception of historical science before the enlightenment, but I am not sure Stark is really going to help here, if he's done as ham-fistedly here as in God's Batallions.
