James, That's quite an amazing and honest article, and well worth bookmarking. It reflects, but also goes further than, a 2005 Guardian article by atheist journalist Roy Hattersley titled Faith does breed charity, with the byline "We atheists have to accept that most believers are better human beings". If only we christians could live up to these standards all the time!

I would anyhow heartily recommend Udo Middelmann's recently published Christianity versus Fatalistic Religions in the War Against Poverty
He has been speaking on this for decades, nice to see him also releasing a book.

Dear James, I've pretty much always thought Christianity has a beneficial effect on societies as a whole.My problem as an atheist is this fact makes not one iota of difference as to whether the theistic proposition is true or not.

Very true, elephant. However, many atheists would disagree with you on that one. The arguments that absence of belief is not a barrier to good deeds, and the related one that religion will adversely affect your behaviour, are spread widely by atheists.
