An interesting discussion. But I find people like him miss the point for several reasons: 1. As a non-believer, he can take a theoretical approach, point up difficulties, as he sees them, but have no commitment to resolving them. But as a believer prays every day and submits my thoughts and actions to God, I am dealing with such issues practically, not just theoretically. I wouldn't expect him to see the truth in the same way that I try to know it. 2. Further, because I have concluded that the reasons for believing are stronger and more fundamental than the reasons for disbelieving, I must believe there is a solution to any apparent difficulties, and it must be consistent with the reasons why I believe. Again, unlike him, I have an incentive to look for solutions rather than problems. 3. He doesn't understand, as many christians don't seem to understand, that both Jesus and Paul, by their direct statements and by their actions, indicated that the time for the Old Testament law has passed, and we are no longer bound by it. Once you realise that, his so-called problems are a house of cards. So in the end, he has unfortunately constructed a straw man (straw person??) that shouldn't cause the slightest difficulty to any thoughtful christian. I find the critiques by so many unbelievers to be like that. I find, in fact, that we are playing different codes of football on different playing fields, and we are hardly connecting. Thanks for the link.

that whole question just assumes a fundamentalist outlook from the outset; no attempt is made to understand what sort of text is being dealt with. If the Genesis creation myth is an attempt to turn pagan mythology on it head, for example, then it is not intended to be sicence or literal history. Does that mean that it doesn't mean what it says? Does not mean what one says in using metaphor or figures of speech?
