I see a psychiatrist for ADD, and this is the first time I see this Doctor. And he goes on and on about God. "God has provided this and that, children are God's gift to us, and Mother Teresa is his hero." So I mention a little about my faith difficulties and he starts ripping on religion and that God is only a delusion in the mind. And that I should read the God Delusion by Dawkins! He went on and on about it. Even offered to loan one of his five copies. I have no idea how he went from mentioning God to recommending the God Delusion.

I'm no psychiatrist, but I am pretty sure that the fact he was doing either of those things shows a lack of professionalism on his part.
Either that or he was schitzophrenic, in which case should disqualify him as a psychiatrist. Or he was playing some kind of psychological game with you, the purpose of which I can't figure out.

Nate
1. As a mental health professional, I can tell you that this clinician is in violation of one of the most central tenents of the APA code of ethics (at least if he is practicing in the U.S.): a clinician will NEVER attempt to force his values on a patient.
2. Spirituality is an essential part of the human identity, and even non-religious counselors would never go so far as to call God a delusion or to condemn religion. In fact, modern Psychology has expanded it's focus to study religion because of it's beneficial effects.
3. Unless your psych. is using an extremely bizarre form of Gestalt therapy, then I fear you may have a clinician who is.....not well.
4. What in the world did his rant have to do with your ADD?
God's wounds! I cannot stand the substandard clinicians who have entered the field since the APA loosened it's formally strict regulations.

As a doctor, I can honestly say that many, MANY psychaitrists are themselves a bit... well, nuts. And they would agree with that assessment Mind you, as Merkavah said. your doc's behaviour is a) horribly muddled and b) downright inappropriate in his capacity as a professional.
