If I recall correctly, Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington was one of these Anglo-Irish types, although he didn't appreciate being called Irish. "Being born in a stable does not make one a horse".

Ah - he didn't say that (I looked it up the other day). Apparently it was Daniel O'Connell who said something similar: 'The poor old Duke (of Wellington)! What shall I say of him? To be sure he was born in Ireland, but being born in a stable does not make a man a horse.'
