As someone who is both a Christian and center-left ideologically (a unicorn in the USA, but not in the world at large!), I would much rather prefer a Sweden to a Texas. However, I understand where right-wing conservatives are coming from.
Generally, people who make a living selling their labor (unionized workers, academics, etc...) prefer left-leaning public policy, while people that make a living investing or working a start-up (Elon Musk comes to mind) tend to prefer right-leaning public policy. Left-leaning public policy favors laborers while right-leaning public policy tends to favors people with capital. Someone who places a high premium on their freedom to do whatever they want with their capital would prefer a Texas to a Sweden, while an academic like myself who makes a living selling my labor to a university would much rather prefer a Sweden to a Texas.
(Because political science is a science, I decided to post this here.)

I think you are generally right, but it is a little sad - are our precious well thought out political ideologies no more than disguised self interest?
For me as a christian, it comes down to the sermon on the mount. If you took Jesus' teachings as separate questions in a quiz, and mixed them up with other ethical/political statements, and asked people to label them as left or right, I think most people would pick Jesus' statements as left, and some of his statements on money would be anti-right. So if Jesus was left, shouldn't I be too?

Luke 12:13-21 The Parable of the Rich Fool
15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” 21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

Has there been a recent "Sweden is a hellhole" thread I missed?

Has there been a recent "Sweden is a hellhole" thread I missed? No, there hasn't. To my knowledge no one here has (seriously) claimed anything like that. I suppose tmo was referencing a belief that appears in wider American society.
