A new movie is coming out about the Mythical figure of Pope Joan. A movie that seems to be treating its subject as a real historical entity whose existence was covered up by a global Catholic conspiracy (as opposed to being a product of anti-papist propaganda).

Oh boy, the loonies are already coming out.

I really want to know more about this myth. I'd heard of it before in passing, but never found anything more solid. Could anyone explain?

I was never really sure what to make of it. Given the notoriously lax standards of some of the late medieval Papal elections, I saw no real reason why it couldn't be true, but of course that's not the same thing as evidence.
