The first major church council was convened in Jerusalem and recorded in Acts chapter 15. According to Usshers 'Annuls of the World' this occasion was AD52 and his was the commonly held date until fairly recently. Modern scholarship prefers to tweak it back and today we are given a range between AD48 - 51.
This may seem a fine point but other dates, more significant, hinge on an accurate J.church council. I would like to ask folk here what date they think fits best.
Thanks,
Ged

Welcome Ged. I hope you enjoy the boards.
But I'm afraid I can't really help with the dating of the council. I suspect there is a lot of scholarship on the question.
Best wishes
James

Church Council in AD 52? That would make it about 19 years after the death of Jesus. And already there are bishops and deacons meeting to decide what to believe in? 19 years after his death there are church buildings and bishops and deacons and wardens and congregations? Can it possible be that in that short space of time the belief had gone astray? Same with Paul and his letters. Writing to tell people where they have gone wrong. In such a short space of time too.
General Councils. AD 47. Council of the Apostles concerning circumcision. Acts of the Apostles. AD 66. Council of the Apostles to elect Simeon Cleophas 2nd bishop of Jerusalem, to suceed James. and on it goes.
