Anyone who knows anything about "The Emergence of a Scientific Culture: Science and the Shaping of Modernity 1210-1685" by Stephen Gaukroger - www.amazon.com/dp/0199296448/?

Possibly, it has been talked about earlier (it has in case slipped my attention), not the least as one reviewer says that

"This work can be read as the history, or evolution, of "Natural Philosophy", from it's almost total obliteration by Christianity, and specifically, Augustine, to the Scientific Revolution up to Newton."

Hi Bjorn,

I've read it and the fact is that it is the complete opposite of what this reviewer says. Although Gaukroger does not think medieval natural philosophy was especially important, one of his main arguments is that science grew in early modern Europe because it was compatible with the prevailing religious ethos, not opposed to it.
