Interesting article, especially the end. I always thought that when Moses made the Israelites drink the water over which he had scattered the powdered remains of the Golden Calf, he was punishing them by poisoning them. Come to think of it, though, how would he (or the story's author) have known that gold was poisonous? According to the analysis here, Moses is just destroying the "god" the same way other Canaanite texts tell of other gods being destroyed.
