This site: ngrams.googlelabs.com/ , allows you to track the use of words in a large corpus of published materials, revealing some interesting trends (I think). Try "Hitler, Pope" for example. I thought the most interesting was the rude words: Try some swear words and you can see when standards started to go downhill (or sharply uphill in this graph). A popular word starting with F is interesting: the frequency in 1800 wasn't matched until the mid 1980s. Take the graph back to 1600 and you see some interesting trends! I'll get my coat....
