The first book that came to mind for me was John Lewis Gaddis 'The Cold War' which I have seen touted as the best one volume study available at the moment - however I have only flicked through it in the bookshop so I can't vouch for how good it is. When I studied the period the best books I read were Richard Rhodes 'The making of the atomic bomb' and 'Dark Sun - the making of the hydrogen bomb, both are excellent and as Rhodes was a journalist they are both pretty good reading material. There is a pretty good book 'The Rise and Fall of Communism' by Archie Brown which I have but haven't got very far into yet - that got quite a few accolades. I can probably recommended a few more if you tell me what particular period you are interested in (Vietnam, Korea, Cuban Missile Crisis etc...)
