Well I just checked back on Richard C's blog for the first time in a while and I saw this on his speaking engagement list.
Ancient Christian Hostility to Science (2pm-4pm): Learn with shock and horror what the first Christian intellectuals said about science and scientific values, and see how starkly it contrasted with the religious values expressed by pagans. Excellent companion piece to the previous night's talk for Skeptics in the Pub, which will have covered the achievements of ancient pagan scientists (and nothing else). So some of you might want to catch both, as the Pub talk will discuss the actual scientific knowledge and achievements of the ancients, while Saturday's talk will then discuss the Christian response to those achievements (and what the pagans thought about them, too).
Are we finding that as the conflict thesis dies in the academy it's experiencing something of a rebirth out in the blog-o-sphere or is it only a few lone proselytizers like Richard and Charles F who are making the running at the moment?

Hasn't the conflict thesis always been alive and well at the popular level, even among many Christians? I'm not sure if this is anything new.

And of course we have the obligatory quote to show the atheists are "on message" as the politicians say: "Religion is based on dogma and belief, whereas science is based on doubt and questioning. In religion, faith is a virtue. In science, faith is a vice,"Has no believer ever believed anything because they thought there was evidence for it? Does the NT never give anything the writers thought was evidence? Has no-one ever doubted or questioned in religion?? Ever??? Has no scientist ever hung on to a theory contrary to the facts? (Progress in science is funeral by funeral!) I understand they want to keep repeating this silly and exaggerated message in the hope everyone will believe them, but it only leaves me thinking they aren't as serious as they claim about facts, evidence and truth. End of rant (for today!).
