I recently spent a few days in Paris, and among other places, visited Notre Dame, which allegedly houses the crown of thorns and other relics associated with Jesus. I am aware of the visit of Constantine's mother to the Holy Land in the 4th century to collect relics. By and large, historians seem very dismissive of these efforts, given the time lapse involved. However, the thought occured to me in Notre Dame "what if..."
Human nature does not change - and it does not strike me as unlikely that there were souvenir hunters in first century Jerusalem as there are now in any place of historical interest. And of course, there were the disciples.. maybe they kept items associated with their beloved Master. I read somewhere that during the French Revolution, people would dip their handkerchiefs in the blood of those guillotined.
My questionis this: is there any written evidence of souvenir hunters in the ancient world?
